Swine flu has been among the greatest concerns of the year 2009 and has affected almost every part of the world. Hong Kong was another place where a number of swine flu cases were reported. The health officials of Hong Kong took swine flu seriously along with their Filipino counterparts. The government of Philippines was concerned as there are about 150,000 Filipinos in Hong Kong. Moreover a large number of women also migrate every year to Hong Kong in search of domestic work. With the outbreak of swine flu the swine flu immigration for Filipinos in Hong Kong was suggested to prevent the Filipinos from the dangerous effects of swine flu there. In the middle of the year 2009 two confirmed cases of swine flu were reported in Hong Kong. Both these patients were citizens of Hong Kong. Seeing these two cases the Filipino government acted proactively and took steps for protecting Filipinos from the attacks of swine flu in Hong Kong. The Filipinos residing in Hong Kong were also asked to consult the consulate’s Center for Health Protection if having flu like symptoms. A hotline service was provided to Filipinos to provide help against swine flu.

Reasons behind swine flu immigration for Filipinos in Hong Kong

Hong Kong government issued notice for travelers apprehending that the outbreaks of swine flu can be worse than expected so they need to travel to Hog Kong at their own risk. However traveling to USA or UK can be more risky as the number of swine flu patients are about 4000 and 80 in USA and UK respectively. The swine flu immigration for Filipinos in Hong Kong is also important because the previous outbreaks of infectious diseases such as SARS and bird flu had caused too many deaths in Hong Kong and it subsequently migrated to neighboring Philippines through travelers. The other main concern of swine flu immigration for Filipinos in Hong Kong is the dense population of Hong Kong in which the spread of swine flu virus is very fast and same is the case with Philippines.

Although learning form past experience the government of Hong Kong had ordered use disinfectant on the lift buttons, seats of bus, taxi, escalator regularly, soap dispensers were also provided in many building lobbies and in shopping malls so that people can use them when needed, people were also asked to wear masks when going out to public places. The schools, restaurants and public transport were asked to suspend operations to prevent spread of disease. Moreover the Hong Kong government had also used the infra red scanners for the people arriving from other nations such as Mexico, USA. The infra red scanners have the capacity to check the increasing body temperature of a human body. To stop the swine flu immigration for Filipinos in Hong Kong the preventive steps were given to the people that they can apply in their daily routine.

Although the number of swine flu cases in Hong Kong are minimal due to efforts of local health authorities, but it still needs monitoring so that the number does not increase in future.
