However, the current outbreak that seem to have originated from Mexico has been found among people who need not have been anywhere near the pigs. Swine flu is a virulent new strain of the influenza A virus subtype H1N1. It is mainly passed from person to person. It is necessary for us to know how swine flu is transmitted and what care needs to be taken.

How is swine flu transmitted?

The symptoms of swine flu are similar to seasonal flu. There may be mild or severe symptoms. Unless the doctors are specifically looking for swine flu they may consider it to be seasonal flu. Specific lab test may be required to find out if what you are infected with is swine flu or not. Consult your doctor if you have been experiencing symptoms like fever, sore throat, cough, body ache, headache, runny nose and chills. Extreme fatigue, vomiting, and diarrhea are also among the symptoms of swine flu.

Swine flu may be transmitted from contact with infected pigs and contact with infected humans. The current outbreak has been mainly from one person to another. You can get the germs by coming in contact with any object that an infected person touches. It is usually transmitted through the droplets when a person sneezes or coughs without covering the face and mouth. Similarly if you touch something which the person has touched, like a door handle or hand rail you can get the virus when you touch your nose or mouth.

Things you should take care of

If you are suffering from swine flu symptoms, ensure that you stay home. Use a tissue to cover when you sneeze or cough. Discard the tissue into the trash can and clean your hands clean with water and soap. If you are not affected but know of someone who is take due care. Avoid being in close contact with the person. Avoid touching objects used by the person. Frequent washing of hands is also necessary to avoid infecting others. Make use of the mask to cover your mouth and nose. The antiviral drugs that can be useful are Tamiflu and Relenza. It has been highly effective when taken within 48 hours of the start of flu like symptoms. You should ensure that you update yourself on the conditions in your area. Contact the local healthcare department and understand the preventive measures that need to be taken.

This current strain of the virus seems to be much more contagious than previous cases reported a few years ago.  It affects your immune system to a large extent and is difficult to keep under control. However, the combination of strains from bird and pigs seems to be resistant to human immune system.
